“The practice of Kolinahr brought peace to Vulcan for generations,” he continued. “However, a century ago, shortly before my birth, some among our people had become corrupted, fragmented, and misguided. At that time, Vulcan was governed by a High Command that began to persecute those who adhered to the true practice of Kolinahr. They waged war against those who had retreated into the Forge, including the High Priestess T’Pau.”
He shifted his gaze to Michael, and then to Amanda.
“Indeed, it was with the aid of one of your own people, a human, Captain Jonathan Archer, who carried the katra of Surak, that T’Pau was able to rediscover the Kir’Shara and restore the complete teachings of Surak. These teachings returned our people to the path of pure logic and reaffirmed the principle of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. Through this restoration, corruption and ambition were once again purged from the Vulcan psyche.
“It was in recognition of the rediscovery of the Kir’Shara, which we will soon see displayed at the plaza, that T’Pau established a day of public observance to acknowledge the enduring significance of Surak’s teachings. This is the meaning of the Day of Awakening.”
“Sarek,” Burnham asked, “is it logical to observe a holiday? Does that not seem… human?”
Talok, who had begun clearing the table, paused at the question which had deviated from expectation both by its implication and by the sharpness of its formulation.
“Michael, your question is indeed logical,” Sarek replied. “However, we do not ‘celebrate’ as you describe. Celebration is an expression of joy, a human emotion. We gather on days of remembrance so that we may collectively reaffirm, as a culture rather than as individuals, the principles that define who we are.”
